Hi,

I have been using Second Life for a long time now, actually that should read, been trying to use Second Life...

I have had an interesting module (Educational Informatics) in which we were meant to include the concept of SL into a new conceptual module that we had to design. Although the theory of Second Life is great, and the possibilities seemingly endless, once you start exploring the actual environment and it's real possibilities, you quickly discover there are massive limitations. The most telling clues are with the multinationals that tried to create a presence, Intel for example has invested a lot in SL. But when they try/tried to run conferences in SL they quickly discovered that working with more than five people at the same time in the same area is cumbersome, add multimedia feeds and it is impossible. Not good if you try to get hundreds of people in one area! There are various examples on this, if you want I can get you a number of articles (scientific and non-scientific) that describe problems with SL that are being ignored by the 'hype'.

Hi there,
actually the comment should read "She states that she doesn’t expect everyone to jump in..."
due to access to appropriate hardware and bandwitdh for many users...
but I have been in SL for 18 months and think it's well worth exploring it early. Thanks, Ben
